Coffee News Recap, 15 Apr: US Coffee Championships held at SCA Expo, Brazil’s domestic consumption up by 1.7% & other stories

Every Friday, Perfect Daily Grind rounds up the top coffee industry news from the previous week. Here are this week’s stories. 

Mon, 11 Apr

  • SCA announces winners of 2022 Best New Product and Coffee Design Awards. The winners were announced at the Specialty Expo held in Boston. Best New Product winners include the POUR’D coffee dispenser from Marco Beverage Systems and ROEST’s L100 countertop roasting solution. The 2022 Coffee Design Awards winners include Tropicália Coffee, Colectivo Coffee, and Roast Runner.
  • Torque Coffees launches Proportional Pricing equity model. The model automatically adjusts the prices farmers receive based on retail prices paid for their coffees. Consumers are able to view these prices through a QR code, which also provides information on the producer, as well as roast profiles.
  • SCA announces winners of 2022 US Coffee Championships. The competitions were held at the Specialty Expo, which attracted over 10,000 attendees from around 40 countries. Morgan Eckroth placed first in the Barista Championships, Elika Liftee won the Brewers Cup, Alexandra Hager placed first in Coffee in Good Spirits, Julien Langevin won the Cup Tasters Championships, Nick Berardi placed first in the Roaster Championships, and Piyapat (Flook) Lapteerawut won the Latte Art Championships.
  • Winners of UK Coffee Awards announced. The winners of London Coffee Festival’s award campaign include La Marzocco for Best All-Round Traditional Coffee Machine and Change Please for Most Ethical Initiative.

Tue, 12 Apr

  • ROEST to launch P2000 commercial roaster. The 1 to 2kg-capacity machine pushes air through bean mass, which ROEST claims helps to improve roasting efficiency. The separate bean and environmental temperature sensors help to continuously maintain and adjust temperatures.
  • Panera Bread to use AI-powered coffee monitoring system. The coffee and bakery chain partnered with Miso Robotics to implement the system, which will monitor coffee data, including volume, temperature, and time. Panera Bread states the data will help to improve coffee freshness and reduce waste.

Wed, 13 Apr

  • Joe & The Juice to expand in Middle East. The coffee shop chain currently operates around 300 stores across Europe, the US, and Asia Pacific, but is planning to open between 200 and 300 outlets in the Middle East over the next ten years. Joe & The Juice is also planning an IPO within the next five years.

Thu, 14 Apr

  • PRF Colombia announces new speakers. Gustavo Cerna is the Senior Manager for Coffee for National DCP and Dunkin’ and Matt Swenson is the Director of Coffee for Nestlé Coffee Partners. PRF Colombia will be held at Plaza Mayor in Medellín from 30 June to 1 July.
  • TONE Brewer launches in UK. The Swiss brewer manufacturer launched its TONE Touch 3 model at London Coffee Festival. TONE claims its brewers use ten times less energy than competitor brands.

Fri, 15 Apr

  • Forward Coffee launches seventh series of Lottery roasting campaign. Over 60 global roasters are participating in the Forward Lottery. Upon purchasing a ticket, each roaster receives 1kg of coffee, but with minimal information, and must roast the coffee to the best-tasting profile. Forward states it created the campaign to encourage discussion around coffee pricing.

  • Thu, 7 Apr – Baratza releases Encore ESP grinder. The espresso-optimised grinder debuted at the Specialty Expo in Boston. The new Encore ESP model includes a 54mm antistatic dosing cup for portafilters.
  • Fri, 8 Apr – More than 24,000 visitors attend London Coffee Festival. The festival also raised £9,660 (US $12,580) for the British Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal and £21,791 (US $28,380) for Project Waterfall, which provides clean water sources for coffee-growing communities.
